CIVIL WAR KNIVES (ISBN: 0873649990)
Newman, Marc
Paladin Press, 1998. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 109 pages.
A look into the history of Union and Confederate knives that reveals the attitudes, ingenuity, thoughts, and fears of not only the officers and men who carried these knives, but even the cutlers and blacksmiths who designed and crafted them. Historian Marc Newman spent more than 10 years researching Civil War Knives. As well as examining the collections of dozens of museums, historical societies, presidential libraries, national military parks and battlegrounds, and individual collectors, Newman devoted thousands of hours to locating and studying the oftentimes hidden details and anecdotes attached to the hundreds of Civil War knives documented in this definitive reference. The hardcover edition is out of print. The Book and the Dust Jacket are Fine. Classic Bowie knives, Robert Abels
Classic Bowie knives, Robert Abels
Published by the author, 1967. Soft cover. Fine. 1st Edition. 97 pages.
The classic book in the field of collecting Bowie knives. It is rare to find a collector of this stature who was so ahead of his time. Collectors are fascinated by the niche these knives have carved into American history.
Bowie knives were carried and used by many famous and infamous Americans during a period when this country was undergoing the severe growing pains of a small nation becoming great. American frontiersmen, prospectors, buffalo hunters and soldiers all used these knives as tools of their trade and as a means of protection. Bowie knives were common in the sparsely settled frontier areas, the California gold fields (where their fabulous quality and fine decoration conferred status on the owner), the plains thick with buffalo and the batlefields of the Civil War. Many of these knives are not only treasures for their historical value, but for their great value as pieces of art. Some specimens, obviously the works of silversmiths and jewelers, exhibit beautiful craftsmanship in engraving, tooled leatherwork and metalworking. There is a slight rub a the top of the spine, otherwise the book is a clean, tight near fine copy. The Dust Jacket is only about good with some tears, and edge wear.

Many photographs and illustrations of (in our opinion) some of the most attractive knives ever made. The knifemakers of San Francisco produced a style of Bowie which emphasised the status of the owner. Gilt stamped beige cloth. Quarto, 552 pp., profusely illustrated in full color throughout.
The story of the 19th Century Sheffield, England (and American) makers of the world\'s finest, most practical and efficient blade: the famed Bowie knife, and its many variations: California knives, I Dig Gold From Quartz knives, Arkansas Toothpicks; buffalo knives, and during the American Civil War, knives marked Death to Traitors, Death to Abolition, Liberty and many more, often having highly-decorated hilts, silver and jeweled decoration, and ivory, horn or mother-of-pearl grip scales. The postwar American Frontier era brought large buffalo-skinning and related-use knives. Finally, in the 1870s the American makers of fine cutlery began appearing on the scene, often equalling the quality and style of those by the Sheffield makers. This book includes: American Bowies, Unmarked American Bowies, English & European Bowies, Showpieces, Confederate Bowies, California Knives and South of the Border Knives, plus an Index to Knife Makers and much more, including lavish and beautiful, full-page color shots of some of the finest antique Bowie knives in the world. An invaluable reference, and long out-of-print. The book and matching pictorial dustjacket are new.

Hardback, 248 pages, ISBN: 9780955950742. The Glory Days of the Giant Scarborough Tunny, Mark Ross
‘The Glory Days of the Giant Scarborough Tunny’, (The British Tunny Club, Hardy Bros. tackle and big game fishing in the 1930s), written and published by Scots author and antique tackle collector Mark Ross.
This is the standard edition, numbers 21-25.
“angler in rowing boat catches Giant tunny (tuna) 60 miles off Scarborough”.
“the first thing you feel is a violent tug on the line, a tug that quickly builds up... the biggest fish I hooked towed me away out of sight of the fleet......”
“798lb tunny caught in the North Sea by Colonel E.T. Peel, 1932”
John Drewett - Hardy tackle expert, collector and writer (Hardy Bros., The Masters, The Men & their Reels) foreword:
“Mark’s efforts have culminated in a book that is ‘full of texture’. The monochrome photographs are so evocative of an era when men would don blazers and even suits when posing for the trophy picture. The boatman in their flat caps, the boats from which they fished and the yachts which many of the wealthy fishers possessed all combine to convey a world that will never be seen again. The collaboration between Mark Ross & David Watson has produced a hugely important tribute to an element of British angling history that excites so many fishermen and collectors”.
No wonder the excitement & glamour of this new sport attracted the rich & famous. Blending heroic tales of epic sea battles with enormous fish, the special tackle used, & social history this book will fascinate anglers and antique tackle collectors alike.
In hard back with dust wrapper, 270 x 210mm, 400 pages, colour printed throughout, 475-plus pictures showing atmospheric 1930s angling, the lords & ladies who went tunny fishing, Hardy and other rare big game fishing reels and tackle. All copies numbered.
Also available in special edition bound in leather with slip case. The Glory Days of the Giant Scarborough Tunny, Mark Ross
